Long-term care is generally appropriate when an individual needs ongoing care from nursing professionals, or significant/total assistance with daily activities such as, eating, bathing or dressing.
| Once you have decided that long-term care is appropriate, consider the following factors as you research long-term care facilities. |
| • |
Location: Is the location near family and friends? Hillcrest has three facilities conveniently located around Knox County. |
| • |
Financial Information: Long term care insurance, Medicaid and private payment are accepted as payment by many facilities. However, there are some facilities that do not accept Medicaid as payment for long term care. Hillcrest accepts Medicare and Medicaid, as well as many other types of payments. |
| • |
Not-for-Profit Status: Many families are interested in health care facilities whose mission is to not make a profit but to solely be a resource to the community. Hillcrest is a not-for-profit health care organization whose mission is to provide care for seniors. |
| • |

| • |

Hillcrest has such a continuum of care that offers assisted living, skilled care, specialty care (respiratory, ventilator, and physical rehabilitation), long-term care, outpatient physical rehabilitation services and hospice care. Assisted living is generally appropriate when an individual needs some level of assistance with bathing, dressing or the activities of daily living but does not need 24-hour nursing or medical care. The average resident of an assisted living facility simply needs reminders about their medications, meals and activities and some assistance with performing daily hygiene routines such as dressing and bathing. They enjoy the ability to have assistance when they need it coupled with the independence of going to the dining room for meals, participating in recreation of their choice, etc., along with the privacy offered by their own units.
| Once you have decided that assisted living is appropriate, consider the following factors as you research assisted living facilities. |
| • |
Financial Considerations: Assisted living services are not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. They are covered by long term care insurance or paid privately by a resident or their family. Hillcrest has designed a more affordable alternative for assisted living. Our not-for-profit status allows for services to be delivered at the lowest possible rate to cover care. |
| • |
Dining Services: Three meals a day and snacks, continental breakfast bars, and beverage stations, china and linen service, physician-prescribed special diets, meals planned by a licensed dietician, guest meals for families and visitors and options for early and late dining. |
| • |
Homelike Settings: Spacious accommodations; in-suite options for phone and cable; refrigerators; furnished or unfurnished accommodations; emergency call systems; privacy suites with keyed locks; companion suites available for couples, siblings or lifelong friends; and housekeeping and linen services. |
| • |

| • |
Enhanced Amenities Program: Amenities may include transportation arrangements, home health services, beauty or barber services, personal laundry services or pharmacy services. |

Respite care offers the caregiver the ability to take time for themselves and to "recharge their batteries" through a break from care-giving responsibilities. Respite is a short-term stay – a few days or a few weeks – so that caregivers can take a much-deserved vacation or attend to other pressing issues.
| Respite care may include: |
| • |
Assisted living services – Lodging; meals; housekeeping and linen services; and recreation along with assistance for the activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, hygiene and medication reminders. |
| • |
Long-Term Care – 24-hour nursing needs for individuals who require more than assistance in daily activities, such as incontinence care, feeding at meals or even total care. |
| • |
Respiratory Care – 24-hour, trained respiratory personnel and nursing staff can accommodate the needs of the ventilator resident or an individual with chronic lung disease who lives at home. |
| Once you have decided that respite care is appropriate, consider the following factors as you research respite facilities. |
| • |
Financial Considerations: Respite services are not covered by Medicaid. They are paid privately by families. Medicare does have a hospice respite benefit. Our not-for-profit status allows for services to be delivered at a rate that covers respite care and is more affordable for the caregivers who are shouldering the responsibility of 24-hour care. |
